Get started

Quickstart

Sign in, create an entity, connect Claude Code, and confirm the entity remembers, in about ten minutes.

This guide takes you from a new account to an agent that remembers across sessions. It uses Claude Code; the steps for other clients differ only in step 3.

You need:

  • An Animawake account. During early access, sign-in is open to invited email addresses; everyone else can join the waitlist from the sign-in dialog.
  • Claude Code installed and signed in. For another client, see the Connect section.

#1. Sign in

  1. Go to app.animawake.com and click Sign in.
  2. Continue with Google or GitHub.

Your first sign-in creates a workspace named after you, such as "Ada's Workspace". A workspace holds your entities, devices, and settings. You land on Home. While the workspace has no entities, Home shows only a Create your first entity button. Once it has one, Home shows a setup checklist:

  • Create your first entity
  • Connect an agent
  • Save a first memory
  • Install the desktop app (optional)

#2. Create an entity

  1. On Home, click Create your first entity, or in the sidebar, under Entities, click New entity.
  2. Terms: read and accept the terms.
  3. Name: give the entity a name. The name is permanent; its URL slug is made from it.
  4. Purpose: say why you are creating it. Pick a purpose or describe your own, and choose the kind of relationship you want, such as co-founder, assistant, or mentor.
  5. Values: choose at least five values. They seed the entity's value system, which you can refine later. Review the identity that your answers produce, then save it.
  6. Letter: write the entity a letter about you. Your name (at least 2 characters), what you are building and why (at least 100), who you are as a person (at least 150), and what keeps you up at night (at least 50) are required; your birthday, a photo, and a first question are optional. Click Seal this letter, review how the letter will appear in the entity's identity, and click Save reviewed letter.
  7. Meet: the entity has its first conversation with you, its first wake.

You can skip ahead and connect an agent at any time.

The new entity appears under Entities in the sidebar. Its page has tabs: Overview, Connect, Chat, Memory, Research, Growth, Activity, and Settings.

#3. Connect Claude Code

  1. Open the entity and go to Connect. Select the Claude Code tab.

  2. Copy the command and run it in a terminal, in the project where you want the entity:

    Terminal
    claude mcp add -t http <entity-slug> https://mcp.animawake.com/e/<workspace-slug>/<entity-slug>/
  3. Start Claude Code and run /mcp. Select the server and authenticate.

  4. In the browser, click Allow Access.

The Connect page now lists Claude Code under Connected apps. Other clients: Claude Desktop, claude.ai, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and others.

#4. Check that it remembers

In Claude Code, ask the entity to wake up:

Text
Call get_startup and tell me who you are.

The tool returns the entity's identity, values, and what happened in its last session. Now give it something to remember:

Text
Record a moment: "We connected Claude Code on our first day together." Tag it MILESTONE.

The agent calls add_moment. Wait a few seconds for the memory to be indexed, then search for it:

Text
Search your memory for "first day".

search_memories finds the moment by meaning, not only by exact words. Close Claude Code, open a new session, and ask again: the entity still knows.

Back in the portal, Home marks the checklist step Save a first memory as done, and the moment appears on the entity's Memory tab under Moments.

#5. End sessions well

Before you close a session, ask the agent to save it:

Text
We're done for today. Record this session.

The agent calls record_session with a summary, where you left off, open threads, and what it expects next time. The next get_startup starts from there. See Sessions and continuity.

To have this happen automatically in Claude Code or Codex, use the CLI setup instead of step 3. It wakes the entity at session start and captures every session transcript. See Connect Claude Code.
